Heat stroke and sunburn are obvious consequences of too much time spent out in the summer heat, but broken bones too? Who knew?
We see an uptick in broken bones (fractures) during the summertime at Texas Orthopedics—especially in kids.
Fellowship-trained orthopedic hand specialist Dr. Jason Somogyi says that “with school out, kids are outside a lot more so they are more prone to injuries – playing, doing sports, or in camps being active.”
More playing definitely means more risk for injury.
Dr. Somogyi says if there is ever concern that your child has broken a bone, it’s best to get it checked out and have an X-ray done sooner rather than later.
Head to your closest ER or Texas Orthopedics’ After Hours Clinic where no appointment is necessary.
To avoid summer broken bones in the first place, Dr. Somogyi offers these safety tips to parents:
- Always have your child wear helmets and protective gear (like knee and elbow pads) when necessary…and model good behavior yourself by wearing them also if joining them.
- Make sure kids are always supervised and within eyesight when playing outside.
- Pay extra special attention while on scooters or on a trampoline—a popular spot where many summer fractures take place.
Dr. Somogyi also says to give your kids a friendly reminder that there’s no swimming with a cast if you break a bone—as no kid wants to be banned from the pool during these hot summer days!
